October is both Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Do your part and show support with the help of local nonprofits, businesses and individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of women.
Harvest time is just around the corner. Why not kick off the season with the Loose Goose Wine Festival's inaugural debut? The fest runs through various locations in the Santa Clarita Valley from October 13 to October 16.
Tucked away on a hill, overlooking the expansive valley below, lies a true jewel of local history. Famed silent movie actor William S. Hart moved into his home in present day-Hart Park in the heart of Newhall on Thanksgiving Day in 1927. The 10,000 square foot mansion included 22 rooms that were filled with 1920s modern appliances, and was occupied by Hart, his spinster sister, two servants, and the occasional guests.
At the crucial age of 22, when most young 20-somethings are just breaking through the seal of independence, Devin Bronson's guitar skills have awarded him the attitude of a professional, the wit of a quick-tongued comedian, the cell phone roster of a Hollywood manager and the marked-up passport of a world traveler.
While a school calendar gives many families a familiar routine, "back to school" means meals are often put on the back burner. When the kids get hungry, driving through a fast food restaurant fits right into the busy schedule SCV parents are famous for. Unfortunately, as the lines at the drive-thru grow, so do the waistlines of many young children.
Along a whispery drive down the 14 North, through Vasquez rocks and past the aqueduct, rests a budding saloon and restaurant disguised as an old railroad station with a permanent train in the back to boot. From the looks of it, Vincent Hill Station has a hidden past that beckons patrons to come experience its flare and contemporary French cuisine.
Yes, that is Santa Clarita's own Dr. Mike Golpa schmoozing with Mrs. USA. Seems that the prestigious doctor has been selected as a judge for the 2006 Mrs. U.S. Globe Pageant. The event is sponsored by the international WIN (Women In Need) Foundation, which promotes health and well-being for women facing emotional/physical abuse. Pageant delegates use their travels and titles to increase awareness of the issue. Dr. Golpa is a frequent supporter of women's and children's organizations.
Surviving breast cancer is one of the most powerful triumphs a person can endure, especially when the National Cancer Institute estimates that, based on current rates (2002), 13.2 percent of women born today will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives. While it is more threatening for women, men are not at all immune to the cellular abnormality.
Last year, Soroptimist's Bras for a Cause event raised more than eyebrows; over $20,000 was raised for breast cancer treatment and support. Since the event, $10,000 has been given to Santa Clarita's local breast imaging center to improve its detection technology, and another $5,000 has been used to provide mammograms to women who otherwise could not afford the life-saving procedure. Funds are also used to provide financial support to women with breast cancer, including financial help with childcare, rent, groceries and more.
After hearing complaint after complaint about having nothing to do in the Santa Clarita Valley (not including soccer practice, of course!), we rounded up the troops to present this Entertainment Guide for your past-time pleasure. Now quit whining and get out there.
Don and Cheri Fleming, immortalized forever in the life-sized poster pictured here, again acted as co-chairs for the Boys and Girls Club's wildly successful annual auction. This year's disco inferno raised $500,000 and was by far the highest grossing B&G auction to date. Big dollars were dropped on a too-cute puppy, lots of unique furniture pieces, boxing lessons with a pro and more.
Starpups Depot is to Doggywood what hip boutiques like Kitson, Madison and Lisa Kline are to Hollywood. The store carries the necessary tools to transform your dog into an instant star. Preening pet owners can engulf themselves in a playground of lavish outfits like a metallic pink harness in a snake-like material, trendy totes like the Pet Flys Lucky Horseshoe Pet Carrier (in a to-die-for teal and faux giraffe print) and chew toys with a purpose (proceeds are donated to cancer funds).
Sometimes, good things happen to good people, and the same can be said for organizations. But other times... That's how I feel about Carousel Ranch. The nonprofit equestrian therapy program provides much-needed assistance to over 80 local families. There are kids in this town, sick kids, disabled kids, that can walk and talk because of the skills learned on the back of a Carousel Ranch horse. As a board member, I see the tireless dedication that executive directors Denise Tomey and Becky Graham invest in the program, but more importantly, I see the energy - emotional and physical - that the entire Carousel Ranch staff puts into the children.
After an afternoon boating expedition on Paradise Cove at Castaic Lake, I realized that speeding along the water is one of the most relaxing past times - especially accompanied by three handsome Castaic regulars.
At the grand opening of All Corked Up, SCV Chamber of Commerce Chairman Ed Masterson was overheard complaining that he didn't look good in pictures: "I look at myself and think, 'I really look better than that in person... I hope!'" Inside SCV decided to test his theory by snapping an impromptu pic of Ed and Pam Ingram. Our staffers agree - the jovial Masterson photographs well. It's just that being in print adds 10 pounds.
Tippi Hedren, a cinema icon from days gone by (think Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"), is mad, but not for the same reasons her contemporaries seem to be. There's no made-for-TV movie she feels left out of, no co-star she feels slighted by. No, Tippi has more important things on her mind. She has a foundation to run, and that doesn't leave a lot of time for the drama of show business.
One thing Santa Clarita should be proud of is its passionate pursuit of arts and culture. A newcomer to our artistic society is ESCAPE Theatre, a non-profit children's theater company; and with their last production, "The Wizard of Oz," founder Elizabeth Burson had no problem finding enough munchkins to point Dorothy towards the yellow brick road.
Sweltering temperatures, unforgiving heat waves and scorching pavement are all signs that summer is in full effect and the battle to stay cool has begun. It is never an easy feat in the Santa Clarita to beat the burning sensation of the desert sun, but this month's Great Find is this season's secret weapon to chilling out, literally.
Good music, some picnic munchies, family and friends... What better way to enjoy a warm summer evening? Santa Clarita is home to three major summer concert series: The City of Santa Clarita's Concerts in the Park, Valencia Town Center's Summer Concert Series, and the Lexus of Valencia Jazz & Blues Concert Series. Pick your pleasure - we'll see you there!
Enjoy Independence Day with family and friends without fighting traffic. Stay close to home, grab a flag, and choose a prime fireworks-watching location. This year, it's all about simplicity, which is why we've organized the day's events from beginning to end. Whether you choose one activity or all of them, you'll be reminded that living in a "small" American town can be a beautiful thing.
