Food, Glorious Food
May, 2008 - Issue #43

“Food, Glorious Food.” That’s the theme of this year’s Taste of the Town.
It’s about time we found something to rave about. Gasp - $4 gas has the economy falling like a soufflé at the bowling alley and the Dodgers are on pace to be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs by August. No wonder fleeing to the haven of comfort food makes sense.
Entertaining at Home
May, 2008 - Issue #43

• Tequila Lime Shrimp and Avocado Salad with Crunchy Iceberg, Butter Lettuce and a Basil and Cilantro Vinaigrette
• Crab Enchiladas Suiza accompanied by Chipotle Pinto Beans and Arracherra Flank Steak

The Dish!
May, 2008 - Issue #43

We gringos love a reason to party. How else do you explain the popularity of Cinco de Mayo, a holiday commemorating an obscure battle in Mexico, that is celebrated with great vigor in the U.S.?
Center of Attention
April, 2008 - Issue #42

Newcomers to the SCV probably think our history begins and ends with planting tract houses on denuded ridges, complaining about Napoleonic HOA management and driving pre-teens to soccer practice. Don’t hate these newbies for their ignorance. Sadly, the SCV’s connection to Hollywood and cowboy culture remains hidden from many. Western luminaries from William S. Hart to Harry Carey have called the SCV home and even today we remain a key player in modern movie making.
The Dish!
February, 2008 - Issue #40

Every once in a while a new restaurant comes on the scene that has it all: great food, attentive service, a family-friendly environment in a posh atmosphere and all at an affordable price. Well, get ready folks, because New Moon Restaurant is just that kind of place.

Foundation for Children’s Dental Health Hosts Masquerade Ball
February, 2008 - Issue #40

Everyone’s talking about health insurance. Whether it’s dealing with rising costs at open enrollment time, listening to presidential candidates pitch their universal coverage plans, or learning about a health insurer’s sneaky policy rescission tactics, healthcare is one of the most important issues of 2008.
The Dish!
December, 2007 - Issue #38

You always hear about people who want to make it on Broadway. The heck with that! Make your way to Off Broadway Bistro where every meal is a box office smash!
Get Out of Town!
December, 2007 - Issue #38

Drive around Prescott, Arizona, and you’ll see a small city similar to any other in America. They’ve got a mall, a Wal-Mart and a new Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse.
This New Year’s Eve,
December, 2007 - Issue #38

What? New Year’s Eve is bearing down on you like a mail truck full of post-holiday bills and you still don’t have plans? We know most New Year’s resolutions last about as long as an SCV snowfall, but did you really put off last year’s resolution to stop procrastinating? Time’s running out and the most important party night of the year is bearing down mightily, not to mention snagging those important fiscal year 2007 tax deductions.
The Dish - Restaurant Review
December, 2007 - Issue #38

After 27 years in the Santa Clarita Valley, Le Chene continues to delight a sophisticated gathering of diners who are more than willing to take the road less traveled in order to enjoy what is arguably the best food in the area.
Something Old, lots New for Boys & Girls Club Festival of Trees
November, 2007 - Issue #37

The Boys & Girls Club Festival of Trees has a unique way of formally kicking off the holiday season. SCV home dwellers know by now that they should see these trees before they start decorating at home. These professionally-created trees will motivate the decorator inside of you to spread her diamond-encrusted collage wings, or, more likely - to invest in a pre-decorated tree that not only gives you immense pleasure, but brings much-needed services to the children of Santa Clarita.
Dee-lish! - Sycamore Bar & Grill
April, 2007 - Issue #30

When you were a child your mother probably told you that "it's nice to share." Mother must have been talking about The Sycamore Bar & Grill at Robinson Ranch. Executive Chef Tom McNulty has created a menu of dishes that are just begging to be shared. Generous portions of starters, salads and entrees are perfectly suited to be enjoyed with a companion. The warm, rustic atmosphere of SB&G, with its two indoor fireplaces, expansive view of the golf course, handsome bar and almost den-like seating area with large screen television, invites a long, leisurely stay.
Palatable Passport - June
June, 2007 - Issue #32

Dee-lish! - Vines Restaurant & Bar
June, 2007 - Issue #32

Looking for a sophisticated restaurant with a fabulous menu and wine list but want to stay in the Santa Clarita Valley? Then look no further than Vines Restaurant & Bar at the Hyatt Valencia. Executive Chef Rolf Rothen has dreamed up a new, seasonal menu that is as spectacular as the newly-redecorated dining room. Fresh, in-season vegetables are skillfully paired with the finest cuts of beef, lamb, chicken and fish for entrees that are beautifully presented, inventive and satisfying.

81 Series to Open at the REP
The Repertory East Playhouse will open the highly anticipated "81 Series" on Friday, April 20, at 8:00pm with the award-winning drama, Spinning Into Butter by Rebecca Gilman. Spinning Into Butter explores the dangers of both racism and political correctness in America today. When one of the few African-American students at liberal Belmont College begins receiving hate mail, the campus erupts – first with shock, then with mutual recrimination as faculty and students alike try to prove their own tolerance by condemning one another.
Dee-lish! - Chan Daretta
March, 2007 - Issue #29

Who needs to drive to Los Angeles for great Thai food? SCV residents don’t. We have a great Thai restaurant in our own backyard (Copperhill and Seco, to be exact). Last year, the family-owned Chan Dara restaurant, which has been a favorite L.A. spot for Thai-fusion cuisine for over 30 years, opened up Chan Daretta in North Valencia. It is here in the modern 100-seat restaurant accented with red and gold walls, dark wooden tables and Buddhist statues that Executive Chef Scott Souksavath creates his unique version of Thai food.
Palatable Passport - March
March, 2007 - Issue #29

Who said March Madness had to be about basketball? Spring’s nearly here, and if these fresh options are any indication, it’ll be a season of good eating, no crazy foam fingers required.

Your favorite salad is now wrapped up! The King Caesar Wrap is made with premium chicken breast strips, romaine lettuce, diced tomatoes, parmesan cheese and caesar dressing tucked inside a zesty garlic herb tortilla. Tropical Smoothie Café is located at 28255 Newhall Ranch Road in the L.A. Fitness Shopping Plaza in Valencia; 661-702-1038

Dee-lish! - The Oaks Grille at TPC
February, 2007 - Issue #28

Executive Chef Daniel Otto, who has been at the Tournament Players Club's kitchen helm since August 2006, has transformed the country club's restaurant, the Oaks Grille, into a sophisticated dining venue, accented with a stone fireplace, wood-beamed ceiling and a patio (soon to be enclosed) overlooking the golf course and Santa Clarita Valley.
Palatable Passport - January
January, 2007 - Issue #27

It's the new year! Time to get back into the swing of things and make a resolution to enjoy delicious meals out on the town at the many fine Santa Clarita Valley restaurants listed below. This month's selections will make your mouth water; dine on!
Dee-lish! - Piccola Trattoria
January, 2007 - Issue #27

Word of mouth certainly travels fast - especially when it's good news about Piccola Trattoria, the locally owned wine bar/restaurant in Canyon Country. The name is deceiving because this "piccola" (which means "little" in Italian) eating spot is certainly anything but small when it comes to authentic Italian flavor. Whether meeting up with friends for a glass of wine, joining that special someone for a romantic dinner, or even just taking the family out for pizza and pasta, there's something here for everyone.
Repertory East Playhouse Begins Ambitious 2007 Season
January, 2007 - Issue #27

It's Friday evening and you're thumbing through the local movie theater listings. Nothing new there - a pair of predictable sequels, another inane romantic comedy and a handful of big-on-the-budget, small-on-the-story "blockbusters" you'd rather wait to catch on DVD. Disappointed, you set the paper aside and resign yourself to another Friday-night pilgrimage to Blockbuster or worse, another night sacrificed on the altar of cable or satellite TV. But it doesn't have to end like this.
Palatable Passport - December
December, 2006 - Issue #26

It's the busiest time of year! Treat yourself to a delectable meal out or make your life so much easier by selecting a restaurant to cater your next event or holiday party. This month's selections will make you an SCV-foodie expert; dine on!
Dee-lish! - Salt Creek Grille
December, 2006 - Issue #26

The Salt Creek Grille at Valencia Town Center has long been known for its welcoming ambiance, good food and convenient location. Now it is also earning the reputation as an upscale steakhouse. Owner Greg Amsler, along with executive chef Ignacio Munoz and sous chef Giovanni Castellanos, have expanded the standard menu to include top quality prime steaks. With two fully stocked bars - one inside and one set to open late fall on the heated outdoor patio - appetizers and martinis would be a fitting way to begin the meal.
‘Tis the Season for Home Entertainment
December, 2006 - Issue #26

It's that time of year again when everyone's thoughts turn to the holidays. You know, long evenings spent at home. With, well, Monday Night Football in high def. And cool movies with things blowing up, courtesy your new Blu-ray or HD-DVD player. All on a screen measured in square acres, with a sound system sure to earn you a visit from the sheriff if you dared turn it to 11. Let's face it. Home entertainment is fun.
